Following successful implementation of Cuyahoga County's Demolition Fund, First Suburbs communities find themselves with vacant residential lots ready for infill development. What stands in the way of redevelopment of these sites - our own single-family housing zoning code. Partnering with Cuyahoga County Planning Commission with support from Cuyahoga County Land Reutilization Corporation, First Suburbs spent 2021 taking a look at our current single-family housing zoning codes, to identify ways to update those codes to encourage new housing in our communities. In 2022, Phase Two of this project focused on the development of recommendations and tools to address the issues found in Phase One. This includes the creation of educational materials, surveying developers, researching best practices, and creating how-to guidebooks to help First Suburbs-communities help themselves. Working with our colleagues from Cleveland CDCs and in partnership with Cleveland Neighborhood Progress, First Suburbs members developed recommendations which provided the discussion framework for the October 20, 2022 County Executive Candidate Forum event held at the LaSalle Theater.
